RSS Knowledge

Common questions about RSS, feeds, syndication, namespaces, extensions, and podcasting.

  • What is a Web Feed?

I have heard the phrase web feed but I’m not really clear on what it is. Can you explain what a web feed is?

When people use the term web feed it is typically used synonymously with an RSS feed, but not always. The phrase web feeds can also refer to data feeds or XML feeds. Both data feeds and XML feeds might use a different format (tag structure) than RSS. If a website is asking you to submit your web feed it is safe to assume they will accept RSS. If a website is providing you a web feed to display content on your website it may or may not be in the RSS format.

  • Is RSS Only Available Through a Computer?

No, many mobile devices all support RSS feeds.

  • How Do you Monitor and Track a Feeds Popularity?

There are a number of ways to track an RSS feeds popularity. Unfortunately because of the nature of syndication the tracking is not always reliable or accurate. Use the followng to track the consumption of RSS feeds.

  1. Tracking URLs
  2. Transparent Gif
  3. Web logs
  4. The 3rd Party Services (like FeedBurner, Pheedo, FeedCraft, MeasureMap, SiteMeter, Dr.5z5)
  5. Use Unique URLs

The best tracking will result when a combination of tracking methods are employed. More information on tracking RSS feeds.

  • Is There any Free Way to Create RSS Feeds?

While it might be difficult to locate rss software free of charge, you can always hand create an RSS feed. There is a step by step tutorial at Make RSS Feeds that will walk you through the process of hand creating RSS feeds.

If you find the process cumbersome you may need to buy software that will handle all the encoding for you. Often the time saved by using the software, the software will quickly pay for itself.

When I Submit My Blog to Directories Should I Submit the Web Page or Feed?

Posted on March 10th, 2009 in Feed,Feed Directory,Feed Submissions,RSS by Web Feed Directory  Tagged , , , ,

It depends! Some blog search engines want the URL of the html web page, while others will ask for the RSS feed. If you are manually submitting the blog/blog feed, you will just need to pay particular attention to what they are asking for. If you are given the option of providing html or rss, you will want to provide the RSS feed so that it dynamically updates as your RSS feed updates.

How Many RSS Feeds Should a Website Have

Posted on February 16th, 2009 in Feed,RSS,knowledge Base by Web Feed Directory  Tagged , ,

RSS feeds should be segmented into categories and information sources. For example you might have an RSS feed for a forum, a blog, a newsletter, if you sell various products you might have different feeds for each product or product line. Additionally you might have support feeds or a FAQ feed for each product or product family.

Webmasters might also group feed discounts or coupon deals, offers, press releases, or job postings. Bottom line be createive use RSS feeds for all aspects of communication, but match the theme of each feed so that all the content in a feed is related.

How Do People Read Feeds ?

Posted on February 12th, 2009 in Feed,Feed Reader,RSS by Web Feed Directory  Tagged , , ,

Website users can read RSS feeds using a desktop RSS reader or newsaggregator. There are even mobile applications that will allow you to view the contents of your RSS feed on a cell phone. Additional details on exactly how to view an RSS feed can be found in the article Selecting an RSS Reader.

OPML

Posted on February 10th, 2009 in OPML,Syndication by Web Feed Directory  Tagged , , ,
OPML

OPML (Outline Processor Markup Language) is an XML format for outlines. Originally developed by Radio UserLand as a native file format for an outliner application, it has since been adopted for other uses, the most common being to exchange lists of web feeds between web feed aggregators.

The OPML specification defines an outline as a hierarchical, ordered list of arbitrary elements. The specification is fairly open which makes it suitable for many types of list data.

XML format

The XML elements in an OPML document are:

This is the root element. It must contain the version attribute and one head and one body element.

Contains metadata. May include any of these optional elements: title, dateCreated, dateModified, ownerName, ownerEmail, expansionState, vertScrollState, windowTop, windowLeft, windowBottom, windowRight. Each element is a simple text element. dateCreated and dateModified contents conform to the date-time format specified in RFC 822. expansionState contains a comma-separated list of line numbers that should be expanded on display. The windowXXX elements define the position and size of the display window. An OPML processor may ignore all the head sub-elements. If the outline is opened inside another outline then the processor must ignore the window elements. Contains the content of the outline. Must have at least one outline element.

Represents a line in the outline. May contain any number of arbitrary attributes. Common attributes include text and type. The outline element may contain any number of outline sub-elements.

Shortcomings of OPML

  1. The RFC 822 date format is considered obsolete, and amongst other things permits the representation of years as two digits. (RFC 822 has been superseded by RFC 2822.) In general, date and time formats should be represented according to RFC 3339.
  2. Because “expansionState” is recorded independently of the outline elements:
    • The expansion state of the children of collapsed nodes cannot be stored
    • When an outline element is expanded, collapsed, added, deleted or moved, the expansion state of all elements below it must be recalculated
  3. Due to the arbitrary nature of the “type” attribute, and the acceptance of arbitrary attributes on “outline” elements, interoperability of OPML documents relies almost entirely on the undocumented conventions of content producers.
  4. MIME types aren’t clear; text/xml usually merely identifies the document as having XML content, while text/x-opml does not specify that the document is XML since it lacks the +xml suffix (see XML and MIME).
Validating OPML

Dave Winer has made a request for comments on a proposal for validating OPML and released a beta OPML validator.

Katy Ginger from DLESE has published an XML Schema Document for validating OPML 2.0. There is also a DTD available for OPML 1.0.

Alternative specifications

Alternative specifications have been proposed, notably these include OML, XOXO and XBEL.

  • * Play list
  • * Specification
  • * Presentation
  • * Directory
  • * XML feed list (e.g. blogroll)
